Subjects: British History, Classical Studies and Ancient History, Cornish Studies, History, South-West Studies |
His compact handbook is aimed at all who would like to be able to read Latin epitaphs in churches, but whose knowledge of the language may be sketchy.
It reproduces fifty-two memorials in Latin taken from churches situated largely in the West Country. Each memorial is accompanied by a translation and by notes on the grammar.
Every attempt is made to help the reader understand the context in which each inscription was composed, and to equip the reader with the tools and confidence to tackle other epitaphs beyond the pages of this book and further afield.
John Parker is a retired teacher and has published three other books: Crossnumbers (1993), The Platonic Solids (2002) and Ad Hoc, Ad Lib, Ad Nauseaum (2008). He also contributes to Ad Familiares, the journal of 'Friends of the Classics', which ais to sisseminate the classics to the wider population.
