A full commentary then explores hermeneutical, theological and dialectic issues arising from the text. In turn, this intelligence educates us as viewers, leading us to recognize and appreciate our individual cinephilic tastes, and to know ourselves and each other better. This reading is even more valid for TV series. Yet, in spite of the progress of film-philosophy, there has been a paucity of concurrent analysis of the ethical stakes, the modes of expressiveness, and the moral education involved in television series. Perhaps most conspicuously, there has been a lack of focus on the experience of the viewer.

Cavell highlighted popular cinema's capacity to create a common culture for millions. This power has become dispersed across other bodies of work and practices, most notably TV series, which have largely appropriated the responsibility of widening the perspectives of their publics, a role once associated with the silver screen. Just as Cavell's reading of films involved moral perfectionism in its intent, this project is also perfectionist, extending a similar aesthetic and ethical method to readings of the small screen. Just as they had preferred forms, so they appeared in particular places. The tradition of English supernatural place-names, never before gathered into a corpus, matches the medieval texts to show what places were haunted and why. The dark pools into which otherworldly things were exorcised, the paths on which they led travellers astray, the hills onto which they descended in search of people to command and seduce, and the meadows where they danced—all these can be found on the cognitive map of the peasantry.

This book sheds new light on anomalous experience in medieval life and the relations it forged between vernacular life-stories and the gate-keepers of the written word. Fairies could cure as well as harm, prophecy as well as deceive: that made them a disruptive force in history, theology and morals. They challenge our ideas of a church-dominated society and once they are admitted into the picture, the Middle Ages will never look the same.

Apparently from Virginia, Birt Acres appeared out of nowhere in Britain aged 35, without a trace of his former life. Yet immediately he became a prominent figure in the late Victorian photographic world. He soon teamed up with Robert Paul to make a moving picture camera and then shot the first commercial films in Britain in spring 1895, in parallel with the work of the Lumière brothers in France, before repeating this in Germany. His innovations included being the first to establish a dedicated venue for watching films, to give a Royal Command Performance of moving pictures, to create screen advertising, and to design a home movie camera.

A disdain for showbusiness led to Acres squandering the commercial opportunities he created, and initiated the erasure of his remarkable story. Some of these expatriates have commanded major military formations, others served as high-ranking staff, piloted front-line aircraft, developed and delivered training, or advised senior Emirati officers.

The first such individuals arrived in 1965, when they were engaged to establish the state’s initial professional military force. Closely examining how the war is being fought throughout the battlespace, the chapters avoid falling into the trap of making determinative statements about which developments might be trendsetters or are ‘new’ aspects of modern war. Rather, and given that this conflict apparently is far from over, the contributors eschew determinism and instead offer open-ended and clear-eyed analysis of what is playing out on the ground.

Individual chapters address the following lines of analysis, among others, arising from the war:
- Russian thinking on warfare and how it has been misunderstood by many in the West, as well as judging Russian military performance as simply being represented in numerical results.
- Manoeuvre, and the growing importance of urban areas in land warfare.
- Developments in the delivery of kinetic force (land, air, maritime and cyber) and operational fires.
- Longer-term effects of Russia’s rejection of the law of war and its systematic breaches of international legal norms by actively attacking non-military targets (economic, infrastructure, cultural assets), and the implications of this for NATO’s logistic formations and higher-level policy.
- Communications—both field signals and strategic narratives.

Exploring air, airborne phenomena, and elemental representation, this book dissects the materiality of air, which comes to the fore ever more vigorously given the ongoing environmental and health crises.
