Collection: Animation Cultures

Series editor: Kristian O Moen, University of Bristol

Animation Cultures investigates how animation has been used, understood and created across its multifaceted and vibrant history. From cinema screens to museum exhibitions, from advertising to education, from art installations to visually stunning displays, animation is something that moves beyond boundaries to engage with culture and society in dynamic ways. Throughout the world and throughout its history, animation’s artistry, practices, techniques and forms have been diverse. This book series explores this diversity, illuminating how animation is reshaped and transformed in different localities, contexts of exhibition, historical periods and creative milieux. Whether marginal or mainstream, animation cultures draw upon and transform the rich array of media and arts that surround them, they develop distinctive approaches to production and exhibition, and they offer original and alternative creative practices. Animation Cultures aims to expand our understanding of and appreciation for the diverse paths that animation has taken and continues to take as a lively force in culture.
