Collection: The History of Moviegoing, Exhibition and Reception

Series editors: Matthew Rule-Jones, University of Exeter, UK and Talitha Ferraz, Universidade Federal Fluminense (UFF), Brazil

Founded in 2004, the History of Moviegoing, Exhibition and Reception (HoMER) Research Network has been at the forefront of researching international histories of cinema culture. Playing a defining role in the development of the New Cinema History, HoMER has shifted attention away from films as texts to cinema as a social, cultural and industrial practice: how films circulated, where and how they were screened, who attended them, and what cinema-going meant in everyday life. Drawing on archival research, oral histories, quantitative analysis, mapping and digital humanities approaches to better understand the complex ecologies of screen culture, HOMER has established itself as the international home for empirical histories of cinema exhibition, circulation and reception.

The HoMER book series builds on this internationally recognised legacy by providing a dedicated platform for cutting-edge research on moviegoing, exhibition and reception in their broadest senses. It foregrounds a diverse range of concerns, including audiences and cinema experiences, screening venues, programming and exhibition practices, film circulation and distribution, cinema architecture, technology, policy and the infrastructures of screen culture. Interdisciplinary in outlook and global in scope, the series showcases empirically grounded and historically rich scholarship, including work that advances digital humanities approaches to the study of cinema culture and expands understanding of cinema as a lived, social and historical phenomenon.

The History of Moviegoing, Exhibition and Reception is a companion series to Exeter Studies in Film History. Together, the two series represent the best of scholarship in film and cinema history.
