Alec Badenoch, Utrecht University (Netherlands)

The book series Women’s Broadcasting Histories opens up new directions in the history of gendered work and representation in radio, television and related media. It is global in scope, inviting gendered histories from multiple regions and periods.

The series welcomes works that:

-highlight hitherto invisible or devalued work in ‘hidden professions’ of broadcasting;

-explore how gendered roles intersect with race, class and other social positions;

-develop transnational approaches that focus on networks of knowledge and exchange, as well as paths of migration, often erased in national histories;

-de-centre the main broadcasting institutions to include perspectives from groups such as community broadcasters, women’s and LGBTQ+ movements and activist networks, and trade unions;

-offer transmedial perspectives that show how women’s work and expertise moves into and out of media domains from adjacent areas ranging from costuming to education and beyond;

-address the structural neglect and erasure of women within archives, by identifying gaps in the historical record and adopting methodological frameworks that address such fissures.

Books in the series are devoted to broadcasting, but the series adopts an non-essentialized, expansive view of the media to include analogue, wired and digitally distributed content, thus taking in phenomena such as internet broadcasting, streaming media, and digital platforms, and exploring how new developments have disrupted and transformed gendered labour, workflows, expertise, content and environments.

The series encompasses edited works and full-length monographs as well as ‘compacts’: shorter monographs that focus on gendered broadcasting history through a specific role, site, or object (such as assistant directors, camera operators, writers’ rooms, or tape splicers).
